Art Direction, Design for the Banff Center

For the first time Afghanistan is present at the Biennale in Venice! As a country which for hundreds of years was the intersection of many different traditions, Afghanistan's rich cultural history is sometimes lost amidst the daily newspaper headlines that unfortunately provide a reductive perspective on a much more complex reality. Lida Abdul, a young female artist born in Afghanistan, was brought up and educated in the United States, where she received her MFA in Fine Art at the University of California at Irvine. Her work combines the formalist histories of Western art with the various traditions that collectively define the Afghan cultural and intellectual experience. As an artist who has lived in many different countries, her work is a testimony to the resilience and uniqueness of certain aspects of the Afghan experience that is part of the larger mosaic of the human experience at the beginning of the 21st century.
